The Gift of Dyslexia

Like other dyslexics, Ronald D. Davis was gifted with an unusual talent for creativity and imagination...yet, he grew up wondering why he couldn't function right in school, where teachers labeled him 'retarded'. After numerous failures and setbacks, he eventually became an engineer, a business man and a sculptor – and at the age of 38, made a startling discovery that enabled him to read a book, cover to cover, in just a few hours.

This inspiration led to Davis' revolutionary procedures, outlined clearly and simply in this book so that anyone – teacher, parent, therapist, or dyslexic – can use them successfully to overcome the difficulties of dyslexia.

In this groundbreaking work, The Gift of Dyslexia, Ronald D. Davis shares his own experiences of living with dyslexia – and overcoming these difficulties through methods that he himself devised, based on his ability to think in pictures instead of words. These revolutionary techniques are taught internationally to professionals who have already helped thousands overcome similar problems.

About the Author

The Gift of Learning

Now, in The Gift of Learning, Davis applies his proven techniques to the four most common learning disabilities beyond dyslexia:

  • Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
  • ADHD (the hyperactive variety)
  • Math deficiency (dyscalculia and acalculia)
  • Handwriting problems (dysgraphia and agraphia)

With his "unique perspective on the subject of learning disabilities" (Library Journal), Davis shows how, through a series of mental and physical exercises called "Orientation Counseling" and learning tools called "Symbol Mastery," those suffering from these conditions can now learn how to correct them, embrace their gift – and enjoy learning.

If you have ever wondered what it might be like to be on the autism spectrum, you will enjoy this book by Mark Haddon.

Checking Your Grammar

I would recommend this book as tailor-made for image-based thinkers. I find it beautifully laid out, with great illustrations, and just the right amount of information to digest without getting confused! Author Marvin Terban.

Know Your Rights

Know Your Rights, Student Edition and Guardian Edition Produced by the Learning Disabilities Association of BC, funded by The Law Foundation and found at www.knowyourrights.ca

I do not believe that students are learning disabled, I feel that the system is disabled by its lack of understanding and awareness. With that in mind, as long as you can disregard the 'disability' word, I feel these booklets are extremely useful and empowering.

Project Chef - Cook Healthy Edible Food

Project CHEF: Cook Healthy Edible Food is an experiential, curriculum-based school program aimed at children in grades four and five that teaches students about healthy food: where it comes from, what it tastes like, how to prepare it and how to enjoy sharing it around a table.

Started by Chef Barb Finley, Project CHEF has reached 17,000 children, 700 parent volunteers, in 38 classes in 19 schools, over the past two years. Barb is without a doubt Vancouver's very own Jamie Oliver! She is one of the best teachers of cooking you could wish for, and particularly loves (and is particularly good at) teaching children. So if your 'creative' learner expresses an interest in cooking...here is the link you are looking for!
